- Sergio Pardilla rode on his own to take the fourth stage of the Volta a Portugal, taking the overall race lead as well as ensuring that his MTN -Qhubeka p/b Samsung team claim their third race leader’s jersey in their first season as a Professional Continental team.
Sergio has ridden well the whole year with various top ten finishes for the team this year along with his third place overall at the Tour de Langkawi earlier in the year.
“We had the whole team working for Sergio on the mountain top finish today and guys like, Dennis van Niekerk, Ferekalsi Debesay and Ignatas Konovalovas were there until near the end doing all they could. Sergio finished it off with an incredibly well-timed attack with two kilometres to go therby taking the stage and the yellow jersey,”said the team principal Douglas Ryder.
Sergio was quick to praise his teammates saying what a great job they had done and how good the team had been the whole week so far.
This is the MTN-Qhubeka squad’s third leader’s jersey of the year, with Gerald Ciolek taking the first one at the Tour of Bayern and Kristian Sbaragli taking another at the Tour of Korea. The team has won 12 races so far this season, including four national championships titles and Gerald Ciolek’s epic win at Milan – San Remo.
Douglas and his team are achieveing all the goals they set themselves and are well on the way to becoming the first Sfrican team to start a Grand Tour event. The 2014 season should see them achieving that goal with at least a start in the Giro d’Italia being on the cards.
