Robert has started the Tour de France 9 times and we could well witness him starting his 10th Tour de France all be it in a team car as a Director Sportiff for the Garmin team. He will remain on the Garmin payroll and looks forward to watching the races from behind the wheel of his team car.
After catching up with him back home in South Africa , he was quick to point out that he was now retired and taking a lengthy holiday with his family in the sunshine . He is also spending some of that time still on a bike although he has swopped his racing bike for a motorized bike and will be doing some touring through Swaziland and Mozambique.
Robert’s cycling career has been an illustrious one, starting in 1999 he has ridden for Lampre-Daikin , Mapei – Quick Step , Rabobank , Phonak , Barloworld , Garmin – Transitions , RadioShack and Garmin – Barracuda.
Robert has earned himself an enviable reputation in the cycling fraternity because amongst his many achievements, he was the first South African to compete in the Tour de France and was the 1st South African to win a stage in this event. The win came at the 2007 Tour on Stage 11 from Marseille to Montpellier over 182.5km where he powered across the finish line in a sprint finish with his race radio ear-piece flapping behind him in the wind . That win was 1 of his grandest and it was one of those Proud South African moments in sport. His grand tour wins consist of , two stage wins in the Vuelta a Espana , the Tour de France stage win and a win in the team time trial at the Giro d’Italia.
With all his experience gained over 14 years at the highest level of the sport , he will be a good person to have following younger riders in some of the big events he participated in.
